Visuals

barbarian software | magnetosphere
I just added this visualizer to iTunes. I don't use visualizers much, But this is Sic! LT approved.
Can I make Magnetosphere more/less responsive to the music?
Yes. Use the + and - keys.
I want more/fewer particles (blobs) in my visualizer. Can I do this?
Yes. Use the A and S keys. They add or subtract a hundred particles at a time - tap once or twice and wait for the results. If it starts acting poorly because you hit a bunch of keys, just quit and restart.

Update: Also try hitting the M button for different effects...sic.

Getting High: not so bad

Ceiling height can affect how a person thinks, feels and acts
Now we can never move out of our house. Where are we going to be able to afford ceiling like this again?
"When a person is in a space with a 10-foot ceiling, they will tend to think more freely, more abstractly,” said Meyers-Levy. “They might process more abstract connections between objects in a room, whereas a person in a room with an 8-foot ceiling will be more likely to focus on specifics."

Fox takes another crap to the right

Bill O'Reilly is Rad and so is Fox News
Bill O'Reilly abuses and cuts the mic of retired Colonel Ann Wright, 29-year veteran of the US Army, after she refuses to fall victim to his leading, dishonest questions and smear tactics. Apparently in Bill's demented world, criticizing the actions of President Bush in explicitly violating international law — something Col. Wright spent years teaching — constitutes "blaming" America.

I keep talking myself into and out of getting a bike again in the future, and when I do the bike I always come back to is the Ducati Monster. It was a genre shifter for mototorcycles akin to Nirvana for rock and roll. The design is a bit dated, but still looks awesome. This guy has done all the research for me. ER, here I come.

Apple - iPod nano - (PRODUCT) RED™
Two days ago, I saved Africa. What did you do?
"You make choices every day, from the clothes you wear to the music you play. Now making a choice means making a difference. In 4GB and 8GB models1, the iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED holds up to 2,000 songs, 25,000 photos2, and a little hope. That’s because $10 from every iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED sold goes directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Which means your iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED sounds good and does good at the same time."
My choice made a difference, bitches!

It's a bike, tool

For my friends that mountain bike (hopefully including me this next summer). For four bucks, you can't go wrong.

National Geographic Talk Abroad Travel Phone
"The National Geographic Talk Abroad Travel Phone is the ideal solution for your international communication needs. Whether you are a frequent business traveler or are a tourist seeking a reliable yet affordable cell phone solution, the National Geographic™ Talk Abroad Travel Phone has you covered in over 100 countries. Since this is a prepaid solution, there are no contracts to sign or monthly bills – ever! Best of all, there is absolutely no cost to receive a call in 60 popular destinations. Outgoing calls are affordable as well."

The cons are: it's an old monochrome candybar nokia, the outgoing rate is something like 90 cents a minute, and a UK phone number. But if you travel a lot (which I dream of doing after schoolio), this might be the ticket. Especially if you can slip the sim card in your unlocked iPhone.

A Los Angeles 'Hotel' for Internet Carriers
"If the Internet is a superhighway, One Wilshire is a really popular roadside hotel. It's a 30-story building, and once exclusively housed law offices. CRG West manages the property, and they're the tech real estate branch of the Carlyle Group. David Dunn of CRG West says 23 of the building's floors are now designed to house not people, but some of the most important communications infrastructure in the country."

This is possibly one of the most connected buildings in the world. The amount of fiber on these floors is freakin' nuts.

Pre-Popping Question Qeustions.

Questions Couples Should Ask (Or Wish They Had) Before Marrying
There's some good ones here. Like:
1) Have we discussed whether or not to have children, and if the answer is yes, who is going to be the primary care giver?
(Translation: You don't want kids either, right?)

4) Have we fully disclosed our health histories, both physical and mental?
(Translation: If you go crazy/fat, we're done.)

14) If one of us were to be offered a career opportunity in a location far from the other’s family, are we prepared to move?
(Translation: You know we're moving as far away from our parents as possible.)
12) What does my family do that annoys you?
(Translation: What don't they do?)

We started this and we want to keep it and we want to make it bigger and bigger each year by getting bigger sponsors to be involved with the festival and underwriting the festival. Technology Review: Battery Breakthrough?

Battery (?)Breakthrough?
Actually it sounds like it's some type of combo battery-ultracapacitor, but if it's real, GM's gonna be pissed.

"The company boldly claims that its system, a kind of battery-ultracapacitor hybrid based on barium-titanate powders, will dramatically outperform the best lithium-ion batteries on the market in terms of energy density, price, charge time, and safety. Pound for pound, it will also pack 10 times the punch of lead-acid batteries at half the cost and without the need for toxic materials or chemicals, according to the company."

The Male Pill

Revolutionary hour-before-sex male pill on the anvil:
"...the new pill being researched by scientists at King's College London, contains chemicals that prevent ejaculation and could be in tablet-form. Men could take one daily, just like the female pill, or have one a few hours before sex as a one-off contraceptive. Sexual satisfaction is not affected and the absence of hormones means that a man's fertility should return to normal within hours of stopping the treatment. 'The non-hormonal male pill could be taken when and as needed,' researcher Dr Nnaemeka Amobi was quoted by the daily Mail, as saying.. 'If the man was taking the pill over a period of several months and decided to come off it, we would expect his fertility to return just as quickly as if he had taken it on a one-off basis,' fellow researcher Dr Christopher Smith added. The contraceptive was inspired by the observation that some drugs used to treat schizophrenia and high blood pressure also prevent ejaculation. However, side-effects including dizziness and drowsiness mean these medicines could not be marketed as contraceptives. "
